Overview
In two recent articles published in PI Magazine — "The Checklist: A Simple Yet Essential Guide" (Issue 194, July/August 2024) and "The General Security Checklist" (Issue 195, September/October 2024) — we explored the origins and application of checklists in security and investigative work. This piece focuses on the essential components for developing an effective security guard checklist.
Purpose and Application
The primary job of a security guard is to provide a vigilant security force to protect life and property. Whether managing a small in-house guard contract or a large complex assignment, a well-designed checklist guides operations from beginning to end. Both authors bring practical expertise as former guard company owners and certified state training center operators in the New York area, having developed policies, procedures, training materials, and checklists for successful operations.
Site Briefing Schematic
Arrival time and clock-in. Document the start of every shift.
Previous shift briefings. Capture what's happened, what's open, and what to watch.
Incident report summaries. Review patterns and outstanding action items.
Uniform and equipment requirements. Including ID tags and required gear.
Personal Appearance and Conduct
Always maintain a neat and professional appearance. Always adhere to all code of conduct policies. Always carry required equipment: radio, flashlight, notepad, pen, and any post-specific tools.
Closing
A complete checklist is only as useful as its consistent execution. The right document — combined with disciplined supervision and rigorous training — is what separates a credible security operation from a liability.
