Evidence Storage

Forensic evidence storage

The process of storing physical evidence collected from a crime scene or other location in a secure and controlled environment. The goal of forensic evidence storage is to preserve the integrity of the evidence so that it can be used in a court of law.

Forensic evidence can be a variety of things, including:

  • Fingerprints

  • Bloodstains

  • Hair

  • Fibers

  • Shell casings

  • Bullets

  • Drugs

  • Weapons

  • Electronic devices and more

The type of forensic evidence that is collected will vary depending on the crime that was committed. For example, a burglary may result in the collection of fingerprints, while a homicide may result in the collection of bloodstains and other biological evidence.

Once forensic evidence is collected, it must be stored in a secure and controlled environment. This environment must protect the evidence from contamination, tampering, and destruction.

What EVIDENCE CAN WE STORE?

All Florida Investigations has available evidence lockers to maintain or secure and establish the chain of custody and store (non-toxic) potential evidence in locked facility with climate control, security with 24/7 video surveillance.

There are a number of factors that must be considered when selecting a storage location for forensic evidence. These factors include:

  • The type of evidence

  • The potential for contamination

  • The potential for tampering

  • The potential for destruction

  • The cost of storage

The storage location must be secure enough to prevent unauthorized access to the evidence. The environment must also be controlled to prevent the evidence from being damaged by heat, humidity, or other environmental factors.

In some cases, it may be necessary to store forensic evidence in a cold storage facility. This is typically done for evidence that is sensitive to heat, such as DNA evidence.

Forensic evidence storage is an important part of the criminal justice process. By properly storing forensic evidence, law enforcement can ensure that it is available for use in a court of law. This can help to solve crimes and bring criminals to justice.
